Barbecues are the "in" way of entertaining this year. Today's grills are not like those of yesterday but if you combine the two, you have a "Lone Star" shindig with the charm of New England and the warmth of the Midwest, as well as open spaces and the adventure of the west. In other words, you can combine and include the entire U.S. if you so choose.
Hay bales are "atmosphere" and serving your finest brew, whether beer, or Long Island Ice Tea in mason jars is just "cool" enough to start the party moving.
Folding End Tables
Considering today's economy and the cost of food at the market, you don't have to scrimp on flavor when you count your pennies at the check-out. While steak may be a bit on the pricy side of your party budget, no one will even miss those beefy cuts when you opt for pork ribs or brisket, burgers made in hamburger heaven and "dogs" with all the fixings, whether they be regular, bun-length, or plumpers. You can even go with that Wisconsin favorite of brats and pick and choose from an array of ingredients from cheese filled, to beer basted and so on.
If you have a great back yard you are one step ahead. If not, there are terrific parks, lake sites, and woodsy places that allow grilling and comraderie. Check first with local authorities about any restrictions so that your party doesn't end before its time.
No grill fest is complete without the resplendent "sides." These can come to order as cole slaw, beans, garlic Texas toast, corn on the cob, and icy cold watermelon.
Seating can be those bales of hay, old blankets spread on the ground, or lawn furniture you may have. Table coverings are fun and ideas can be found at any second-hand store. If you sew colorful bandanas together you can transform any folding table into a picnic delight. You might even pick up an old line-dancing video and get the guests to tap their toes and show off their favorite moves. For the "kid's corral" you can pick up games such as ring toss, or make your own. Amid the laughter and fun the kids will never know the difference between store-bought and home-made, because the fun part is the main part.
Your invitations can be over the land lines, or mailed by snail mail. In fact, creating your own invites can also include your personal "cattle brand" - as well as directions to the party homestead. If you enjoy your BBQ near a body of water, fresh fish can't be beat and the prize catches will just add to the menu of icy cold for the drinks, grilled to perfection for the main course and the colorful, assorted flavors of the sides. When it comes to dessert, fruit pies are always a safe choice as guests can pick and choose, or you can offer a mini-ice cream shop where scoops of basic ice cream can be trimmed with everything from crushed candy bars to fruit slices as well as sauces of the season, such as strawberry/rhubarb.
This year with gas prices soaring sticking around home is a great adventure if you take a bit of time and make life extra special but with a few dollars left over. It's your choice how you entertain, but the gas grill beats the gas pumps - so enjoy. Something to think about.
