If you are planning on having a church dinner, then you need to have some volunteers to set up for it. It's best to get a commitment from slightly more help than you need since some people get sick or have some problems with children and might have to stay home. A sign up list is generally best with a phone call to remind to help.
For food, it's generally best to have everyone bring an item. Rarely does it end up being all deserts or all side dishes. If you are worried about this happening, on strategy is to give out certain items for certain last names. A through H, for example, would bring main dishes and so on.
Folding End Tables
The actual set up is where you will need most of the help. It's best to have banquet tables and folding chairs that can be out for the dinner. Set out at least 20% more chairs than expected because at times people bring all the kids and spouses to church dinner days versus other Sundays.
Don't make the mistake of putting the chairs too close together. People enjoying being spread out a bit. If there isn't enough tables for the dinner, consider using a smaller table from one of the Sunday School rooms for the children to use. Also put chairs along the wall for those who can eat without having to have a table to eat off of.
For clean up, it's easiest to make an announcement that everyone just pitch in and help clear up the tables and any trash that is left out. Afterwards, have the same volunteers help put the tables away.
There will always be changes to the plan, but generally church dinners don't have to be as complicated as they might sound.
